Is Placardex a government app?

No. Placardex is an independent app made by 8086 LLC. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the U.S. Department of Transportation, PHMSA or any government agency. It reproduces public U.S. government regulations and names its sources.

Where does the table come from, and how current is it?

From the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 49, as the U.S. Government Publishing Office publishes it on GovInfo: §172.101 with Appendix A and Appendix B and §177.848. Every entry, every load check and the About screen show the edition statement of that text and the date its data was synced, so you can compare them with the official text. The table is updated in app updates, at no extra charge.

How do I look up a material?

Type the four digits from the placard, the orange panel or the shipping papers, with or without “UN” or “NA”, or type part of the proper shipping name. Results update as you type. If you type the letter O where a zero belongs, Placardex says so and shows the number.

Why does an entry show several packing groups?

Some entries in the table have more than one packing group, each with its own values. Placardex shows every value for each packing group until you choose the one on your shipping papers; it never picks one for you. Class 2, Class 7 and Division 6.2 have no packing groups (§172.101(f)).

What do X, O and a blank mean in Load check?

Load check answers each pair from the segregation table in 49 CFR §177.848(d), in the regulation’s own words:

Each answer also shows the table’s row and column. Where §177.848(c) or a subsidiary label (§177.848(e)(6)) changes the answer for a pair, the answer says so.

Does Placardex tell me whether a load is safe or compliant?

No. Placardex shows the regulation’s text. It does not classify a shipment or approve it. Your company’s trained hazmat employees make those decisions.

Reference only — verify against the official 49 CFR text and your company’s own HazMat training/certification before shipping.

Does it include emergency response guidance?

No. Placardex is the §172.101 table, with its appendices, and the §177.848 segregation table. It does not include emergency response guidance or isolation distances.

What are the special provision codes on an entry?

Column 7 of the table lists special provisions by code, for example IB2, T4 or TP1, and Placardex shows those codes. Tap a code to read the provision’s text, as the regulation prints it in 49 CFR §172.102 (every code but IP16, which that edition prints without text).

Does it work without a connection?

Yes. Search, entries and Load check work offline, even in Airplane Mode, because the table ships inside the app. Downloading and updating the app need a connection.

I think a value is wrong. What do I do?

Email support@8086.llc with the UN or NA number, the entry’s name, the edition line Placardex shows, and what the regulation says. Corrections come in app updates, at no extra charge.

Is there a subscription or an in-app purchase?

No. Placardex is paid once, at $4.99 in the U.S. (the store shows your local price). There is no subscription, no in-app purchase and no advertising.

How do I get it on a new phone?

Download it again from the store with the same Apple Account or Google account, at no charge. Your recent lookups and your load are kept on the old device; a restore from your own device backup can bring them across.

How do I get a refund?

Apple or Google sells Placardex and handles refunds: see Apple’s page Request a refund for apps or content that you bought from Apple, or Google Play’s refund policies.

Which devices does it run on?

iPhone and iPad with iOS or iPadOS 26 or later, and Android phones, tablets and foldables with Android 8.0 or later. It supports dark mode, large text, VoiceOver and TalkBack.
